Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
