Kids Suffered a 'Massive Cost' During Coronavirus Pandemic, Johnson Informs Investigation

Temporary Picture Inquiry Proceedings Government Investigation Session

Children suffered a "significant price" to safeguard others during the Covid pandemic, the former prime minister has stated to the investigation reviewing the consequences on young people.

The ex- PM echoed an apology delivered earlier for things the authorities got wrong, but stated he was satisfied of what educators and educational institutions achieved to cope with the "extremely difficult" situation.

He responded on earlier assertions that there had been no plans in place for shutting down schools in the initial outbreak phase, claiming he had presumed a "great deal of deliberation and care" was by then applied to those judgments.

But he said he had furthermore hoped schools could continue operating, labeling it a "nightmare notion" and "personal horror" to shut them.

Previous Evidence

The investigation was told a plan was merely developed on 17 March 2020 - the day preceding an statement that schools were shutting down.

Johnson stated to the inquiry on the hearing day that he accepted the feedback around the lack of planning, but commented that implementing adjustments to schools would have demanded a "significantly increased state of awareness about Covid and what was expected to happen".

"The speed at which the virus was spreading" created difficulties to prepare for, he added, stating the key emphasis was on striving to avoid an "appalling public health situation".

Conflicts and Assessment Results Disaster

The inquiry has also heard previously about multiple conflicts involving government members, for example over the decision to close down educational facilities a second time in 2021.

On Tuesday, Johnson informed the investigation he had wanted to see "widespread screening" in schools as a means of keeping them functioning.

But that was "unlikely to become a runner" because of the new alpha type which appeared at the same time and increased the transmission of the virus, he noted.

One of the largest problems of the outbreak for both authorities occurred in the assessment results fiasco of summer 2020.

The schools administration had been compelled to retract on its application of an formula to determine results, which was designed to avoid higher scores but which instead resulted in forty percent of estimated grades reduced.

The general reaction caused a U-turn which meant pupils were finally given the marks they had been forecast by their teachers, after national assessments were abolished earlier in the year.

Thoughts and Prospective Pandemic Strategy

Mentioning the assessments situation, investigation legal representative proposed to Johnson that "the entire situation was a catastrophe".

"If you mean was Covid a tragedy? Certainly. Did the deprivation of schooling a tragedy? Yes. Was the loss of assessments a tragedy? Certainly. Were the frustrations, anger, frustration of a considerable amount of kids - the additional frustration - a disaster? Yes it was," the former leader stated.

"But it must be viewed in the context of us striving to cope with a much, much bigger disaster," he continued, citing the loss of learning and exams.

"Generally", he said the learning administration had done a quite "brave job" of attempting to deal with the crisis.

Afterwards in the hearing's proceedings, the former prime minister said the confinement and separation regulations "possibly went too far", and that kids could have been spared from them.

While "with luck a similar situation never occurs again", he commented in any future subsequent outbreak the closing down of learning centers "genuinely must be a measure of last resort".

This stage of the coronavirus investigation, looking at the impact of the pandemic on young people and young people, is due to end in the coming days.
