As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
